January 6 - Hawai`iana Live: "Hapa Inikini": Troy joins Leilehua Yuen for a presentation on the long historical relationship of Hawaiians and Native Americans. In a cross-cultural artistic collaberation, Troy plays traditional Native American flute as Leilehua dances the late 19th century hula "Hapa Inikini," a mele about a Hawaiian/Indian young man who escapes the wiles of a woman who lives by the sea, prefering to enjoy the beauty of the lehua of Pana`ewa. The show also features Bob Alder on the theater's historic pipe organ, and video featurettes. 11:00 am Wednesdays, Palace Theater, 38 Haili St. Hilo.
January 10 - How to Play the Native American Flute Workshop: Learn the basics of traditional Native American flute music and explore this haunting musical tradition with Troy. 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm at Lihi Pali, Pu`u Hala`i, Hilo. June 13 - The Native American Flute: Troy Good Medicine De Roche will conduct a two hour workshop on Native American flutes on June 13th, Saturday, from 10:00 am to 12:00. at The People’s Center, Pablo, Montana. If you are a beginning native flute player or just interested in the flute, this workshop is perfect for you. Whether you own a flute or not you can still attend! The workshop will cover the basics of playing a Native American flute including scales, fingering and special techniques. How to care for your flute, what to look for when buying a flute and a bit of the history will also be discussed. Cost for the workshop is $30 in advance or $40 at the door.
